The OWN Academy Commitment

Goal-Setting Session

Most kids come home from camp inspired. 3 months later, that inspiration either became something — or it didn’t. This check-in call is where we find out, and where we make sure it does.

  • What from camp have you applied in school or in your own life?
  • What skills or moments have stuck with you?
  • What do you want to work towards in the next 3 months?

We set those goals together, and hold them to it.

Goals Review Session

We come back to the goals we set in November. What they followed through on, what stalled, and what we help them tackle next.

  • How far have you come since November?
  • What have you achieved? What got in the way?
  • What does the next chapter look like?

"The week is our responsibility. What comes after it is our commitment."

– Natalie Chan, Founder & Principal, OWN Academy

Frequently Asked Questions

What is OWN Inspiration Camp?
  • OWN Inspiration Camp is a six-day summer program in Hong Kong for students ages 9–13.

Students choose three industry masterclasses and spend a full day inside each one with a working professional in that field.

Depending on the tracks they choose, students might:

    • bottle and brand their own hot sauce product
    • argue a case in a mock courtroom with a Hong Kong barrister
    • shoot and edit a short film across Hong Kong
    • swab and culture bacteria from real surfaces
    • design and sew a garment for a real user
    • build and pitch a campaign for a Hong Kong brand

    The week also includes:

    • a city-wide scavenger race across Sai Kung
    • team-based challenges
    • one night in Sai Kung Country Park
    • peer-voted awards
    • a 12-month alumni community after camp
  • OIC is designed for students ages 9–13 who are:

    • curious about how the real world works
    • interested in trying new things
    • ready to meet new people outside their usual school circles
    • more engaged when learning feels active and hands-on

Some students join because they already love filmmaking, science, design, business, or gaming.

Others join because they are still figuring out what they enjoy and want exposure to different industries before secondary school.

    The program works well for:

    • students from both local and international schools
    • shy students who need the right environment to participate more confidently
    • highly energetic students
    • academically strong students who want learning to feel more applied and practical
    • anyone willing to be challenged and to grow
  • Not at all. Students are not sitting through lectures or rotating through short activities every hour.

Each masterclass is designed as a full immersive day:

    • one industry
    • one mentor
    • one project
    • one concrete output

    For example:

    • Entrepreneurship students walk through a wet market sourcing ingredients before bottling their own branded hot sauce
    • Law students receive a real case file and argue both sides in a mock courtroom
    • Marine Biology students field-sample tidal pools in Sai Kung and present findings back to the group

Students still practice skills they use in school like communication, writing, teamwork, presentation, critical thinking, but inside real situations instead of worksheets or exams.

When and where will the program take place?
  • OWN Inspiration Camp: Summer 2026 is a six-day program (Monday–Saturday) that will run from July 27 to August 1, 2026.

The program is primarily based at Hong Kong Academy, with an off-site Scavenger Race across Sai Kung and an overnight outdoor experience at Pak Lap, Sai Kung Country Park.

You will receive a deck with the Google Maps link and all details after registration.
  • At OWN Academy, we believe age is just a number. If your child is slightly younger or older than the 9-13 range, we are happy to speak with them to understand their readiness and see whether the program is a good fit for them.

  • Just notetaking materials, a water bottle, lunch, and an open mind! Detailed packing list will be shared in the orientation call and email.

  • Yes. For day camp students:

    • lunch is included during program days

    For boarding students:

    • all meals are included throughout the full boarding experience

Dietary restrictions and allergies can be communicated during registration so the team can prepare accommodations where possible.

  • Yes. Transport between official camp venues and off-site masterclasses is included. Students are supervised throughout all transitions between:

    • Hong Kong Academy
    • off-site masterclass venues
    • Sai Kung activities
    • overnight locations

Daily pickup and drop-off shuttle subscriptions will also be available with an additional cost (HKD 1,080), from:

    • Admiralty
    • Kowloon Tong
  • You’ll receive a confirmation email and next steps, including a welcome packet and logistics guide.

Families will also be added to a private WhatsApp group where the OWN Academy team shares:

    • live updates
    • reminders
    • announcements
    • schedule updates
    • selected photos and moments throughout the week
  • Students leave with:

    • projects they created during masterclasses
    • written reflections and outputs
    • new peer connections
    • direct exposure to professionals and industries

    Examples include:

    • a bottled hot sauce brand
    • a short film
    • a field journal
    • a written closing argument
    • a campaign plan
    • a sewn garment

Students also join the OIC alumni community, which includes:

    • mentor Q&As
    • bi-monthly check-ins
    • future opportunities
    • follow-up calls at 3 and 6 months after camp

OIC is designed as a longer-term community, not just a one-week event.

What will my child learn at the program?
  • Students learn by participating in real tasks inside real industries.

Depending on the masterclasses they choose, students may:

    • build and bottle a consumer product
    • argue a legal case
    • pitch a campaign
    • field-sample marine species
    • culture bacteria from Hong Kong surfaces
    • edit a short film
    • build an architectural model
    • design and sew a garment
    • develop a gaming strategy
    • create and post short-form content

Alongside the technical activities, students repeatedly practice:

    • presenting ideas clearly
    • asking questions directly to professionals
    • collaborating under time pressure
    • adapting when projects change
    • solving disagreements inside teams
    • thinking independently instead of waiting for instructions

Many parents tell us these are the moments that continue helping students long after camp ends.

  • Each day is structured around one main immersive experience.

    A typical day includes:

    • morning check-in and team briefing
    • a full-day industry masterclass or challenge
    • lunch and breaks
    • project work
    • mentor feedback
    • presentations or reflections before dismissal

Unlike many camps, students stay inside one craft or industry for most of the day instead of rotating through short sessions.

    For example:

    • Filmmaking students spend the day planning, filming, editing, and screening one short film
    • Law students spend the day building and arguing a case
    • Entrepreneurship students spend the day sourcing ingredients, developing recipes, branding, and bottling a product
  • The Scavenger Race takes place on Monday and is one of the most important parts of the week. Students are placed into small teams and navigate checkpoints across Hong Kong under time pressure.

At each checkpoint, teams complete industry-inspired challenges involving:

    • communication
    • navigation
    • decision-making
    • teamwork
    • initiative

This is usually the first time students:

    • work closely with completely new teammates
    • navigate unfamiliar areas independently
    • make quick group decisions without parents or teachers stepping in

The race sets the tone for the rest of the week.

  • Students are not expected to “choose a future career” at age 9 or 13. The goal is exposure. Most students this age have only seen industries through:

    • YouTube
    • social media
    • school subjects
    • TV shows

At OIC, they experience the work itself. For example:

    • Law students prepare evidence and cross-examine arguments
    • Marine Biology students identify species alongside a real marine biologist
    • Marketing students build campaigns and pitch them
    • Architecture students design spaces for real user needs
    • Entrepreneurship students take a product from market sourcing to branding and bottling

    This helps students:

    • discover interests earlier
    • understand how school subjects connect to real industries
    • realize what kinds of environments energize them
    • build confidence trying unfamiliar things
  • Yes. Students choose one masterclass per day across Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Each day has four fixed industry options.

    Tuesday:

    • Entrepreneurship
    • Law
    • Business Consulting
    • Filmmaking

    Wednesday:

    • Marketing
    • Architecture
    • Bacteriology
    • Fashion Design

    Thursday:

    • Gaming & E-Sports
    • Race Car Driving
    • Marine Biology
    • Content Creation

Students spend the full day inside the track they choose.

  • We intentionally keep groups small so students receive close support throughout the week.

    Current ratios are approximately:

    • 1:4 during outdoor experiences
    • 1:6 during indoor sessions

Students work in small teams throughout many camp activities, which allows coaches and staff to:

    • notice quieter students
    • support group dynamics closely
    • provide individual feedback
    • maintain strong safety supervision
  • Devices such as iPads or phones are generally not used during camp. We want students to focus on real-world interactions, teamwork, and communication. However, for certain structured activities (like research, filming, or specific project tasks), students may use their devices under high supervision and clear guidelines. Outside of these moments, all devices are kept away to ensure they are fully engaged, present, and distraction-free.

Can we sign up for only part of the program (specific days or activities)?
  • No. OWN Inspiration Camp: Summer 2026 is designed as a complete six-day experience, and students are expected to attend the full program for the week they enroll in. Each day builds on the previous one to create a meaningful learning journey.

  • No. Industry masterclasses, team challenges, and the outdoor experience are intentionally integrated. The program is designed to be experienced as a whole, rather than as separate components.

  • No. The overnight outdoor experience is a core part of the program and plays an important role in building independence, teamwork, and confidence.

  • That’s completely normal.

Many students feel nervous before the overnight experience, especially if it’s their first time away from home.

That’s also why the overnight happens at the end of the week, not the beginning.

By Friday, students have usually already:

    • built friendships
    • settled into their teams
    • become comfortable with mentors
    • adjusted to the environment

Most students who were initially hesitant end up enjoying the overnight experience the most.

However, we understand every child is different.

If a student feels genuinely uncomfortable during the overnight camp, a supervised speedboat transfer to Sai Kung Market for collection can be arranged in exceptional situations (additional fee applies).

That decision would always be coordinated directly with parents.

Who are the professionals leading the sessions?
  • Every Industry Coach actively works inside the field they teach.

    The 2026 roster includes:

    • a practicing Hong Kong barrister
    • a founder of a hot sauce brand sold internationally
    • a marine biologist working in Hong Kong conservation
    • a  working architect
    • a filmmaker
    • a marketer
    • a consultant
    • a designer
    • a gaming professional
    • a scientist

We specifically avoid using generic camp facilitators for industry sessions.

Every coach goes through OWN Academy’s training program and child safeguarding procedures to ensure a safe, supportive, high-quality experience for all learners:

    • child safeguarding training
    • required background screening procedures
    • SCRC (Sexual Conviction Record Check) requirements where applicable
  • We follow strict safety protocols, including supervised check-ins, secure onsite and offsite access, and clear emergency communication.

    OWN Academy also implements:

    • Supervised venue transitions
    • Staff check-ins
    • Emergency communication procedures
    • Child safeguarding policies
    • Detailed risk assessments
    • Medical evacuation (med-evac) procedures

    Students are supervised during:

    • Transport
    • Off-site activities
    • Overnight camping
    • All official camp hours

    The program also maintains:

    • Third-Party Liability (3PL) coverage
    • Group Accident Insurance for participating students

These policies are part of our wider student safety framework across onsite and offsite activities.

  • Before camp begins, parents will be asked to provide relevant medical information, including:

    • allergies
    • dietary restrictions
    • medications
    • medical conditions
    • emergency contacts
    • any learning or behavioural support information

This helps the team prepare appropriate supervision and accommodations where possible.

  • We take safety and respect seriously.  Responses depend on the severity, intent, and recurrence of the behaviour.

    Immediate Removal (Serious Violations)

May result in dismissal without prior warning:

    • Physical violence (hitting, pushing, fighting)
    • Threats of harm or intimidation
    • Severe, targeted, or repeated bullying or harassment
    • Discriminatory language or actions (racist, sexist, etc.)
    • Possession of prohibited items
    • Behaviour that puts others’ safety at risk

    Warning & Intervention (Moderate Concerns)

May result in verbal warning, parent communication, or behavioural contract:

    • Repeated disrespectful language
    • Ongoing disruptive behaviour
    • Minor bullying (e.g., exclusion, teasing) that continues after correction
    • Refusal to follow safety instructions

    Guidance & Coaching (Minor Issues)

    Handled through reflection and redirection:

    • One-off inappropriate comments
    • Low-level disruption
    • Conflicts between peers

We believe in accountability and growth. Students are given the opportunity to reflect and correct when appropriate. However, the integrity of our community and the safety of all participants will always come first.

My child has ADHD. Can they join?
  • Yes, many students with different learning styles thrive at OIC.

    Because the week is:

    • active
    • social
    • hands-on
    • movement-based

Many students who struggle with traditional classroom environments engage very well here. Please share any relevant information during registration so the team can understand:

    • support needs
    • routines
    • triggers
    • accommodations that help your child succeed

In some cases, an interview may be required to determine the appropriate level of support needed from our team.

  • Yes. The camp is designed for all personality types, whether outgoing, reserved, or anywhere in between.

Through team challenges, guided activities, and supportive coaching, students learn to communicate, collaborate, and step into new experiences at their own pace. Many students finish the camp feeling more confident and comfortable expressing themselves, not because they are introverted, but because the environment encourages growth for every child.

  • Ideally, yes, but fluency is not strictly required. As long as students are proficient in English and comfortable communicating ideas, expressing themselves, and participating in group discussions, they’ll thrive at camp.

All activities are conducted in English, so confidence in listening, speaking, and collaboration will help them get the most out of the experience.

  • Yes! Returning students experience:

    • new challenges
    • different masterclass combinations
    • new Industry Coaches
    • new teammates
    • different project outputs

The social dynamics and projects naturally change each year. Many returning students also take on stronger leadership roles inside teams as they become more familiar with the environment.

What matters most at OWN Academy?
  • We focus on who your child is becoming, not just what they can do. Our environment is built on three core values:

    • Meaningful relationships
Our coaches build genuine connections with students and continue guiding them beyond the camp experience.
    • A safe space to experiment
Students are encouraged to explore, try new things, and learn through real experiences without fear of failure.

    A community without judgment
Every child is welcomed as they are. We celebrate individuality, curiosity, and personal growth.

  • Students experience this through:

    • small-group collaboration
    • industry mentorship
    • peer-led activities
    • project-based learning
    • team challenges
    • outdoor experiences
    • presentations and reflections

The environment is designed so students are not passive observers. They are expected to participate, contribute, communicate, and create throughout the week.

What happens if there is bad weather during camp?
  • Student safety is always the priority. Because OIC includes:

    • outdoor activities
    • off-site masterclasses
    • Sai Kung programming
    • transportation across Hong Kong

Some activities may be adjusted depending on official Hong Kong weather warnings.

If outdoor activities cannot run safely, indoor alternatives or adjusted programming will be provided where possible.

  • The program will continue as normal. All indoor sessions and scheduled activities will proceed unless otherwise communicated.

  • The program will continue where safely possible. However:

    • junk boat activities will be cancelled
    • water-based activities will be replaced with land-based programming
    • some outdoor activities may be modified

Families will receive updated schedules directly from the OWN Academy team if adjustments are required.

  • The program will be cancelled for the affected period. If students are already onsite:

    • students will remain in a supervised safe location
    • staff will continue supervision until pickup arrangements are confirmed
    • dismissal will only happen once conditions are considered safe

Families will receive direct communication regarding:

    • pickup procedures
    • updated scheduling
    • safety instructions
  • The program will continue as normal unless conditions worsen. Some outdoor activities may be adjusted depending on safety assessments.

  • If warnings are issued before the program day begins:

    • the program day will be cancelled

If warnings are issued during the program:

    • students will remain in supervised indoor safe locations
    • outdoor activities will stop immediately
    • activities may move into classrooms or sheltered venues where possible

If conditions become unsafe for continuation:

    • the program will be suspended
    • students will remain supervised until safe pickup arrangements are made
  • Yes. If a full camp day is cancelled due to severe weather conditions, a make-up session will be conducted on: Sunday, August 2, 2026

This ensures students do not miss:

    • masterclass experiences
    • project work
    • presentations
    • industry sessions

Families will receive updated schedules and logistics if the make-up day needs to be activated.

We aim to communicate all major weather-related decisions as early as possible.
